Photo Essay Documentation

Brief outline: Make a photo essay, either topical or a narrative, and write 500 words about your work.

How I will tackle the brief: I plan to tackle this brief by researching how other photographers have photographed an Auction, and will experiment with a range of techniques.

Proposal: I intend to take photographs of an Auction by experimenting with a range of techniques. In intend to make a topical photo essay, taking photos of the items being sold, and taking photos of the auction.

Research: I have done some research into photos taken during an auction and have found various images.

This image is a long shot of people sat during an auction. This is similar to how I want to take one of my photos. The photo is taken inside, so is rather bright, and the main focus is on the people buying.

This photo is similar as it is also bright, but in this photo you can see the auctioneer, unlike the previous photo. The focus of this photo is the actual auctioneer rather than the buyers.

Final piece: For my photo essay, I decided to do something different. I decided on a topical approach and took photos of a Fine Art Auction. I took photos of the viewing, using many close ups of the items for sale, and changed the brightness depending on the colour; for example for a darker object I would experiment with the aperture until the levels were about correct. After that I took a couple of photos of the auction. Due to politeness to the people buying, I was only allowed to take a couple of photos of the auction. For these photos I used mostly long shots for my photos; a couple of the buyers and a couple of the auctioneers.

Evaluation: I think my project went well overall. The research was hard to find, as there aren’t many photographers who go and photograph an Auction because there are rules in place, and in some places photography isn’t allowed. For my piece, I went to Dee Atkinson and Harrison Saleroom in Driffield because I work there part time, and I asked if I could take photographs. I was given permission and so the photographing went rather well, and I took a lot of photos. In the end I managed to get 19 photos.

Improvements: I think that I could have improved the photo essay by choosing a different topic, because not many people are interested in photos of an Auction, and I could have chosen something topical like “Dogs” because it appeals to more people.

Problems: The main problem was photographing the Auction. There were so many people sat there buying, and they all know that there is a no photographs policy, and I felt like when I was taking the photographs of the buyers then I was invading their privacy a little.

How could it have been developed: I think the work could have been developed further by choosing an easier topic, and concentrating more on the techniques.
